Using the Teams Chat Viewer

The Teams Chat Viewer is a browser-based tool that converts downloaded Microsoft Teams chat JSON files from Keepit into a readable format. This tool enables customers to view, analyze, and export Teams chat conversations with features including perspective switching, dark mode, chat summaries, and PDF export capabilities.

Getting started

1. Access the tool.

2. Download the HTML viewer.

Download the HTML viewer file to your computer and save it somewhere easy to access (for example, Desktop or Downloads).

How to use the Teams Chat Viewer

Downloading chats from Keepit

1. In your connector, locate the chat conversations you want to view.

2. Select the desired chats (you can select multiple).

3. Click the download option to export the chats as JSON files.

4. Save all JSON files to a local folder.

Important: The viewer expects individual JSON files, not folders. Ensure you have the actual JSON files ready for upload.

Loading chats into the viewer

1. Open the downloaded HTML viewer file in your web browser.

  • Double-click the file, or
  • Right-click and select Open with > [Your preferred browser]

The Teams Chat Viewer interface will appear.

2. Drag and drop all downloaded JSON files into the designated drop zone.

  • You can select and drag multiple files at once. All files will be processed immediately.

3. View the chat conversation.

Navigating the interface

Switching perspectives

The viewer allows you to see the conversation from different participants' viewpoints:

  • Look for the perspective switcher in the interface.
  • Select the participant whose perspective you want to view.
  • The chat will recontextualize to show messages from that user's viewpoint.

Enabling dark mode

For improved readability in low-light conditions:

  • Locate the dark mode toggle in the viewer interface.
  • Click to enable/disable dark mode.
  • The theme will switch immediately.

Viewing chat summaries

To see aggregate information about the conversation, enable the Chat Summary option.

The summary panel will display:

  • Total messages: Count of all messages in the conversation
  • Participants: Number of people involved in the chat
  • Timeline: Chronological visualization of the conversation

Exporting chats

Creating a PDF export

Once your chat is loaded and configured as desired (perspective, etc.), click the Download PDF button from the tool bar.

The viewer will generate a PDF file of the current view. You can then save the file to your preferred location.

Note: The downloaded PDF will not include Dark Mode formatting.

Start over

Clicking the the restart button will allow you to import another set of chat JSON files.

Technical notes

Data privacy and security

  • The Teams Chat Viewer runs entirely client-side in your browser.
  • No chat data is uploaded to external servers.
  • JSON files are processed locally on your machine.

This ensures complete data privacy and security compliance.

File format

  • The viewer accepts JSON files exported from Keepit's Teams Chat backup.
  • Each JSON file represents one chat conversation.
  • Multiple files can be loaded simultaneously for batch viewing.
