Permissions for Zendesk backup and restore

Keepit backs up whatever Zendesk data the connected account has admin-level access to. You can use a custom role scoped to just the areas you want backed up, rather than an account with full access to everything.

For each area, Keepit checks the account's access level:

  • Admin — all required permissions for the area match the expected value. That area backs up completely.
  • User — at least one required permission is missing or mismatched. Keepit still attempts to back up that area, but you may see a warning, and the resulting snapshot could be incomplete or empty.
  • No access — none of the required permissions match. That area is excluded from backup and its toggle appears grayed out.

Ticketing (Support)

Tickets, Users, and Groups and Organizations require Admin-level access for the connector to be created. The remaining categories below (Views, Macros, Automations, and Triggers) aren't required; Keepit backs up whatever access level you grant them.

To count as Admin-level for a given area, every required permission listed in the table must match its expected value. If none of them match, that area has No access and can't be backed up.

Permissions for Zendesk backup and restore

Keepit checks for the built-in Zendesk Admin role first. If your account already uses this role, no changes are needed — Keepit treats it as Admin-level access across every area automatically. For Manage team members specifically, the highest permission available on a custom role is All with self-restriction; the built-in Admin role uses All. Keepit accepts either.

Set up a custom role

1. In Zendesk, go to Admin Center > People > Roles.

2. Create or edit a custom role.

3. Set the permissions above for each area you want backed up.

4. Assign the role to the account you'll use to connect or reauthenticate Keepit.
